Meet ilryong moon

Ilryong Moon cares about helping make Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) the best in America because he understands first-hand the value of a good education.

When Ilryong immigrated to the United States from Korea in 1974, he struggled to learn English and had to repeat the 10th grade. After graduating from T.C. Williams High School in 1977, Ilryong became the first member of his family to attend college, graduating from Harvard University. In private practice since 1984, Ilryong is now a partner in a successful law firm.

As a product of public schools, he knows first hand just how much a quality public education can mean for young people today.

Ilryong has served on the School Board for 20 years: 16 years as At-Large and four years as Braddock District member. He has served three terms as Chairman and three terms as Vice Chairman. He has also served as chair of the Budget, Audit, Governance, and Policy and Personnel Committees. Throughout his service he has worked with five superintendents.

During his tenure in office, Ilryong oversaw much needed improvements and continuous advancement in this world-class school system—one of the country’s best. As the father of two graduates from Fairfax County public schools, he is a former ESL student who believes that excellent education should be available to all.

Ilryong has been a resident of Northern Virginia since 1974. He enjoys teaching Sunday school, which he has taught for about ten years.
